James - Property Services Technician

“I like that I have the opportunity to expand my skills with more training to help me progress.”

“I like that I have the opportunity to expand my skills with more training to help me progress.”

We caught up with our Property Services Technician Supervisor, James, while he was hard at work at the Woolpack Inn. He spoke about his time at Hi-Tech Property Services and how the company has helped him to be successful in his career.

As a Property Services Technician, James visits various sites on a regular basis and fixes all the minor wear and tear and breaks around the property. He does it all in one go, so our clients are never feeling left behind. They can also call him out if something goes wrong in the mean time.

Here’s what he had to say:

How did you get into construction?

I have worked in the construction industry for over 14 years. I went travelling and returned looking for a job, then started as a labourer. Having enjoyed the work I was doing, the company I worked for decided to put me in courses so I could get a trade behind me, and expand my skills. Then, in 2011, I decided to become my own boss. I went self-employed and had my own property maintenance company for many years.

What’s the best part about your job?

I enjoy visiting my allocated sites where I am left to make my own decisions and use my initiative to get the works completed to a high standard. Once completed and the jobs are logged I am confident to move to next task and the general managers and staff are happy the works are complete.

What do you enjoy about working at Hi-Tech?

Hi-tech are so welcoming, especially when I first started. They are like a family and the team is great. They put me at ease straight away. The staff are friendly and are always happy to help should I need anything. I like that I have the opportunity to expand my skills with more training to help me progress.

Is there one job you’re particularly proud of or that sticks with you for a certain reason?

I was working at one site and the general manager asked me to take a look at a shower in one of the rooms. They were full booked that evening so all rooms were booked out. Unfortunately, it wasn’t fixable. After explaining a new shower would be required, I managed to find the exact shower from a local merchant and got this installed within the time on the same day. This gave me satisfaction knowing I had got the job done and avoided disappointing customer. The general manager was very happy with this, and I got some great feedback.

What would you tell someone looking to work with you?

If they were expected to learn from me then I would explain what is expected of them within their role in a friendly and helpful manner and advise I am also there to support should they need anything. I am a friendly and honest person and will always help where I can with my experience in the trade.

What is something that you have learned in your time here?

Working in a hospitality environment I have learnt to manage my time effectively and prioritise my jobs based on the access and availability throughout my day.
