Our operatives were busy working on minor refurbishment works to a thriving pub in Southampton, when one of our project supervisors noted that the Fire Alarm System was incorrectly wired with the wrong cabling, and so failed to cover the whole site. We immediately sent out one of our test engineers who picked up on even more problems. There were various departures from BS5839, as well as a fire alarm system that didn’t meet the requirements of the Fire Risk Assessment.
The latest Fire Risk Assessment deemed an L3 system category as a requirement for the design. However, as we were also completing a minor refurbishment we first had to ensure our design would still satisfy the proposed building modifications. We got our designs signed off by all relevant stakeholders and our H&S Team signed off the proposed cable routes. Then, we got to work… again.
Along with the new system, we fitted several other devices in order to make the site and the system compliant:

Once our team had successfully installed all of the above, we got to work testing the systems. Testing uncovered that one of the bedrooms no longer reached 75 Decibels at the bedhead. That was due to the installation of a fire door between the room and the fire alarm. The sound level must reach at least 75 decibels everywhere for a fire alarm system to be deemed adequate. Naturally, this is especially relevant when it’s over a bed. So, we quickly advised the contract administrator and they provided us with the instruction to fit an additional device.
Finally, we were able to re-test the newly refurbished fire alarm system. We found that our customer was fully compliant once again.
After that, all work was successfully completed and handed over within the expected time frame, along with the original refurbishment!
