Broken Boiler - Repair vs Replace

What do you do when you’re given an extortionate quote for a brand new boiler? You call Hi-Tech for a repair instead!

It’s always challenging when your previously happy customers are freezing cold due to the broken boiler. For one busy site in Oxfordshire, that was exactly the issue. The pub usually serves gourmet burgers in a charming and rustic village setting. It’s got a great reputation and has some great online reviews, and like many of our clients, benefits from the cosy interior it tries to maintain. So, when things go wrong that threaten the warm, rustic feel of the establishment, like a broken boiler, it’s imperative that we are on hand to get them back in operation as soon as possible. 

The Problem

We were called in after their boiler was deemed a write off, and they were quoted in excess of £5000 by another party to replace the whole thing! Given that this cost was deemed unreasonable by Hi-Tech, and rightly, the customer, we quickly dispatched one of our own Gas Engineers to site to assess the situation.  

Our engineer ascertained the cause of the fault was an incorrectly fitted burner seal. Unfortunately, this had caused the internal exhaust to melt. The gas valve also had also been broken and an air vent was leaking. These few issues were more than fixable and at a much lower cost than originally quoted. Coming in under £1000 in total, the customer was thrilled to have us involved.

There are certainly points where boilers become beyond economical repair, but this is always a careful balance. It should be weighted against the cost of repair, business impact and reputational damage. In this case, the repair was standard and easy. We were able to save our customer from a poor diagnosis, which nearly led them down a very expensive path.

At Hi-Tech, we’re also very conscious of sending less and less to landfill, so we always favour a repair over a replacement. It’s much cheaper for the customer and has much less of a negative impact on the environment.
